If you require hospital treatment, you have the option of either a public or a private hospital. Major hospitals and the larger health centres will provide interpreters if required.
Public hospitals provide a full range of medical care for both in-patients and
out-patients (people who need urgent medical attention which may or may not require a stay in hospital). Medicare cardholders are completely covered if they are admitted to a public hospital and for any aftercare after release.
Australia has many private hospitals which provide outstanding healthcare services. Waiting times are shorter in the private hospital system and that’s why many people choose to take out private health insurance. If you are enrolled in Medicare, you will be covered for a percentage of your doctor’s fees. This cover does not include accommodation or other hospital charges in private hospitals.
